Horry County Has a Proud Name

Horry County South Carolina, along with Georgetown County, to the south, are the fastest growing areas in South Carolina today. The Grand Strand, or, as the locals call it, “the beach,” with its miles of beaches and hundreds of golf courses, has become the new southern destination for retiring people of the northern persuasion who desere to escape the urban congestion and cold weather that can make life unbearable.

Most of these people comming here never give a thought to the culture and rich history of the Pee Dee and Wacamaw Neck region. Although Americans, they know little of the important part played by the people of this area in the founding of the United States. Names like Marion and Horry are little known or thought of today, in the areas that they freed from British hands. This is a shame. Many of the native families in the area are desendants of men who fought with these men to set South Carolina free and set in motion the great experment of representive government on the North American continent.

Horry County was named for Gen. Peter Horry who served under Gen. Francis Marion, called the Swamp Fox, in the South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. Most of their campaigning took place in this area.
